The annual Student Council (STUCO) retreat, originally set to occur on Friday, August 18 to Saturday, August 19, on the PACA campus, has been postponed due to schedule conflicts for some of the council members.

The idea of rescheduling the retreat was an ongoing possibility in the week leading up to the retreat dates, but the final decision was only confirmed that Friday afternoon.

Pan American Christian Academy (PACA) hosts a STUCO retreat at the start of each school year. It serves to bring together all of the returning and new council members, as well as the newly elected high school homeroom leaders and appointed teachers, to discuss ideas, set plans and schedule events for the rest of the year.

Throughout the first day of the retreat, STUCO normally has devotions together, holds activities to get to know each other and have some moments of fun.  They also share a dinner together before they go home. During the second day of the retreat, council members meet again to share breakfast and to work on the yearly calendar and projects for high school.

Student Council members were looking forward to this event.  Some of them expressed their expectations, stating that they were ready to “have a productive meeting on year-long plans.”

They hope to “learn more about each other to create a better team,” said senior Nicole Lin, who is the vice president of STUCO.

Subjects brought up would involve the planning for the year as a whole,  as pointed out by senior Isabel Lobato, who is the Media Coordinator. STUCO also plans for special events from Spirit Week scheduling to future class dinners that are planned by each high school homeroom.

According to junior Arthur Silva, the Spiritual Life Coordinator for STUCO, there are specific things that STUCO members need to meet together in order to complete. Among STUCO’s duties include deciding dates for future events, how the events would occur, and what events should be maintained or added, Silva explained.

In addition to event-planning, another matter to be talked over by the Council involves possible changes to the Pop Shop. The Pop Shop is a convenience store located in front of the gym, which gives STUCO the opportunity to serve snacks and drinks during daily lunch times and during the home games of each sports season.

Although a specific date for the retreat is not yet available, it appears that it will be moved to a weekend in the 2nd quarter of the school year.
