Two weeks after May 24, PACA will start to send invitations for high school students, who have achieved academic excellence, to be part of the National Honors Society.
This year Mrs. Grace Chung, French teacher and cheerleading coach is responsible for administering the process to the Honors Society at PACA. She knows how the Honors Society started and what you need to do to get in.
“The National Honors Society started in the USA, the main thing is to recognize students that have the four pillars: scholarship, leadership, community and character. Students who have a GPA higher than 3.5 are invited to apply. The students write an essay about why they should be accepted. They need to show through this essay to the teachers how they serve their community, how they show character and how they apply it in their lives,” said Chung.
Being part of the National Honors Society can bring a lot of improvement and benefits to academic life. According to the University of People (LINK HERE ) , joining the Honors society will bring not only academic benefits, but also personal improvement. The student Chloe Harper, senior, have a long experience in the NHS.
“I feel like I have grown but not necessarily academically. I feel I have grown in my ability and knowledge to serve and grown in my desire to help others. That isn’t to say the NHS hasn’t impacted me academically. Being a part of the NHS has encouraged me academically to do my best and challenge myself academically,” said Harper.
Every year during Candlelight, the NHS members have a special moment where they light other candles using theirs, representing the importance of sharing your light and knowledge with other people. The candle-lighting represents that they are passing on this tradition.
The National Honor Society stands as a beacon of academic excellence, leadership, service, and character. Living this experience, the students have an opportunity to improve their academic performance, gain knowledge and be prepared to make changes in the future. Pay attention to your email in the next two weeks and you may be the next member.
