Jennie, member of the famous k-pop group, BLACKPINK, released her first solo album this year on March 7, called “Ruby” with 15 songs. Although Jennie has been releasing songs since 2018, this is her first full album made independently from her last company, that manages BLACKPINK.
It is a very eclectic album with high-profile guest spots from Doechii, Dua Lipa, and Kali Uchis. One of the most noticeable songs is “like JENNIE’’. This is a song where Jennie talks about all the hate that she receives but also highlights her popularity.
First of all, at the end of the first stanza of the song Jennie says, “Don’t bore us, take you to the chorus.” Her song reflects a criticism about this time period that the music industry is going through, where people want short songs, and the only thing that matters is how many numbers, clicks and access the song has.
This shows the importance of validating the lyrics of this song. The singer explains in these lyrics that the public should not just count views or TikTok trends to validate her music.
This song is also a response to Jennie’s haters and to how people normalized the cancel culture. She sees a problem in the industry where it’s okay with destroying celebrities’ mental health. But Jennie responds to that with empowerment and class.
In her song, she shows that this type of criticism can’t hurt her anymore, and that, in the end, she is still a great artist who is always creating trends that people want to imitate. I recommend this song, not only because of all the criticism behind it, but also to understand the artist. Listening to Jennie’s first album solo debut is a good way to get to know her musical talent separate from BLACKPINK.
Besides that, “like Jennie” has a unique beat for you to get motivated during your day. The easiest way to listen to “like JENNIE” is listening to her album, which is available on Spotify, YouTube, Apple music, Amazon music and SoundCloud.
